ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an illustrative example of PM research in engineering projects in the Dutch process industry. The study focused on identifying potential causes of complexity in projects and how the early project phase could be adapted to these complexities. The research was performed with companies of the NAP network.1 The study was structured in four phases and comprised of exploratory case studies, a quantitative survey, explanatory case studies and an evaluative survey. By combining qualitative and quantitative work, this study is an example of successfully applying a mixed methods approach in PM research in engineering projects. Rather than presenting the content-results of the study, this chapter focuses on the research approach followed.
