ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the introduction of literacy in the early years of schooling. It outlines how teachers organise experiences that children need as they set out on their journey to becoming competent readers and writers. The chapter explores how children become more confident as readers and writers. It focuses on creative uses of language: the importance of storytelling, the many ways in which drama supports literacy learning and the sharing of poetry with children. The chapter highlights the role that 'speaking and listening' play in literacy learning, especially the teacher's part in providing opportunities for purposeful dialogue in the classroom. In a literate classroom, teachers establish communities of readers and writers and endeavour to organise spaces where children can experience what it is to be literate. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
