ABSTRACT

Innovative data sources such as floating car data are improving significantly both the monitoring of the transport network performance/status and the provision of advanced mobility services. The first available floating car datasets were obtained from commercial fleets, which are already equipped with fleet management systems and operating a significant amount of vehicles with a good coverage, both at geographical and temporal levels. At urban level, the taxi fleets are able to provide accurate and frequent floating car datasets, which are used by various institutions, private companies and public authorities for research, service development and traffic management, respectively. The main idea of this research note is to provide a qualitative and quantitative description of the floating taxi data through the presentation and comparison of such datasets in the cities of Barcelona, Berlin, Poznan and Thessaloniki.
