ABSTRACT

The Arabic inscription discussed below is attached to the sanctuary of Shaykh Murād near Jaffa (see Fig. 1). It is, without doubt, the twin inscription of a Latin one discovered at the end of the nineteenth century by Charles Clermont-Ganneau (see Fig. 6), both commemorating the works of Emperor Frederick II in Jaffa at the beginning of 1229. They were prepared on one or two blocks of marble, undoubtedly by two different carvers, and were probably set above the gate of the citadel of Jaffa or built into one of its walls. The discussion of the Latin fragment will follow a detailed study of the Arabic one.
