ABSTRACT

The story of Jaymati is located in the power politics of the Ahom state during the political turmoil of theseventeenth century. The situation was created with the atrocities of the Ahom king Sulikpha, Lara Raja (boy king), who was instigated by the minister Laluk Sola Barphukan. He wanted either to kill or mutilate all prospective Ahom princes who would aspire to the throne in order to make his position secure. Jaymati, the wife of Gadapani, a prince of the blood royal was targeted, and the state authority found the prince missing. Jaymati was forced by the royal authority to disclose her husband’s whereabouts. When the princess refused to tell the hideout of her husband, she was subject to inhuman atrocities and ultimately assassinated by the royal executioner.
