ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what research has revealed about the effectiveness of pedagogical interventions in the teaching of Spanish pragmatics and its impact on the development of college Spanish textbooks. Despite the limited research, today we can affirm that pragmatics is teachable and thus, it should be incorporated in the foreign language classroom. However, the current analysis of Spanish textbooks shows that authors appropriately stress the communicative function of language learning but continue to forget to address the development of pragmatic competence in the learning of Spanish as a foreign language. The chapter ends with specific pedagogical guidelines and concrete ideas for developing materials for teaching Spanish pragmatics based on what research on teaching pragmatics has shown.
