ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the humanities within the context of Egyptian higher education by analyzing the admissions system and the position of the humanities within the higher education hierarchy. It analyzes enrolment trends relative to other fields in both public and private universities and the human resource allocated to the humanities relative to other fields of study. The chapter describes the labor market performance of humanities graduates relative to other graduates, including their participation, employment and unemployment rates, their sectoral distribution, the occupations in which they are concentrated, and their average wage rates. It reviews the evolution of enrolment in the humanities in Egypt relative to other fields of study since 1990, including enrolment in private universities. The chapter also reviews the breakdown of enrolment by sex and explores the educational resources allocated to the humanities relative to other fields, as indicated by student-teacher ratios and the share of full-time faculty in teaching staff.
