ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of technology in schools. It considers ways in which teaching assistants support learning and teaching with technology. The chapter also explores the impact of web 2.0 tools and apps. It describes online safety and ethical issues surrounding the use of technology. The chapter considers different types of assistive technology and their role in promoting inclusive practice. The use of technology can be seen as both transformative and as an important life skill, in that its successful use not only equips children with the necessary skills to participate in their continuing education, but also for their lives in the workplace. Children need to locate, explore, analyse, exchange and present information, as well as developing the necessary skills to use information in a discriminating and effective way. With the help of the pupils, Kate and Marie have developed a display in their classroom, with pictures of pyramids, as well as information on Ancient Egyptian clothing and jewellery.
