ABSTRACT

It is no accident that the words structure and instruction share the Latin root struere, meaning “to heap together” or “to arrange.” Structure is apparent in instruction in many ways. Ordering classroom environments to promote appropriate behavior and transfer of learning, teaching students to use step-by-step strategies, and systematically arranging teaching presentations each reflects the influence of structure in instruction. Each of these aspects of instruction is important not only for students with disabilities but also for teaching in general.
