ABSTRACT

In order to unravel the intricacies of language and communication, it is necessary to gain an understanding of higher mental abilities and the underlying cognitive processes in human beings. It is assumed that behind all these specific instances of human cognitive activity lies a common cognitive system responsible for individuals’ complex patterns of thought, learning, and intelligence. Furthermore, the system capable of the high-level processing found in the human species, is assumed to be a unitary system underlying all cognitive processes (Anderson, 1983).
