Introduction to Women and Men in Organizations
Changes in the workforce pose both opportunities and challenges to organizations, and human resource management (HRM) experts have devoted increasing levels of attention to the issues and problems that individuals and groups bring to and encounter in the workplace. Researchers in applied work psychology, organizational behavior, and other related fields (social psychology, sociology, and economics) are also showing greater interest in the roles of gender and sex at work. Furthermore, there is a rich tradition of research and scholarship in the area of women’s studies dealing with similarities and differences in men’s and women’s workplace experiences. Each perspective brings its own set of assumptions, insight, and conclusions to bear, and there is a good deal to be learned by bridging the many disciplines concerned with women and men in the workplace.
