ABSTRACT

Genuine acceptance of one’s ethnicity is positively related to psychological well-being, interpersonal relations, social consciousness, and personal efficacy. These also are major priorities of multicultural education. Because these two areas of concern have many common goals and potential effects, they could easily be combined in the effort to find ways to better educate ethnically and culturally different students and to improve their academic, personal, and social achievement. The discussions in this chapter are based on these premises. They explore some of the specific features and trends in ethnic identity development and demonstrate conceptual and pragmatic connection to multicultural education.
