ABSTRACT

The practice of yielding the right-of-way is most evident at a four-way intersection. In order for traffic to flow smoothly through an intersection, a common understanding must be reached such that every vehicle can proceed without delay, impediment, or accident. The common understanding is that the right-of-way is yielded to vehicles arriving at the intersection first and then to those on the left. Whether one has arrived first or last, all vehicles eventually continue through this crossroad. This image of an intersection highlights the interrelated nature of not only individual drivers, their goals and direction, but also the collective negotiation required to navigate through this crossroad. That is, how one is able to advance through the intersection is dependent on the cooperation of the other drivers as well.
