ABSTRACT

If you use a structural modeling program, you probably use other statistical software as well. Solving a complex data analysis problem typically requires the use of a variety of tools. Unfortunately, the design of structural equation modeling (SEM) programs as standalone programs presents an obstacle to their integration with other software. It is customary to use SEM programs in only one way: First, use a mouse or a keyboard to enter a model specification. Then, run the SEM program. Finally, visually inspect the program’s output or transfer the output manually into some other program such as a word processor. Many developments in SEM programs have been directed towards simplifying this process, making the programs more “user friendly.” However, a computer program that is friendly to users is not necessarily friendly to other programs.
