ABSTRACT

The DLR Department of Aviation and Space Psychology in Hamburg specializes in the selection of operational personnel such as pilots, air traffic controllers, and astronauts. In the DLR selection programs full-scale testing includes cognitive, psychomotor, and personality assessment (Goeters, Hormann, & Maschke 1989). With the exception of projective tests nearly all kinds of psychodiagnostic tools are used: mental tests (paper-pencil or computerized versions); apparatus tests including simulator-like work samples; biographical data; personality questionnaires, and assessment center techniques. Apart from selection tests DLR has also developed and applied test batteries for human performance monitoring in extreme environments such as deep-sea diving (Lorenz, Wenzel, Lorenz, & Heineke, 1993), long-term confinement (Lorenz, Lorenz, & Manzey, 1996; Manzey & Lorenz, 1998a), and space (Manzey, Lorenz, Schiewe, Finell, & Thiele, 1993; Manzey, Lorenz, Schiewe, Finell, & Thiele, 1995; Manzey, Lorenz, & Polyakov, 1998; see Manzey & Lorenz, 1998b for a review).
