ABSTRACT

Survival relies on the capacity of an organism to produce responses to physical and social demands. The physiological mechanisms that underlie the response to stress are crucial to survival. However, long-term exposure to stress hormones can have deleterious consequences (reviewed in Chrousos et al., 1995). Therefore, biological systems also must have adaptive mechanisms or “antistress” systems that counter the demands of stressful experiences.
