ABSTRACT

Cognition is a product of evolutionary and developmental processes. Like other natural biological phenomena, cognitions’ roots are phylogenetic as well as ontogenetic. Unlike other natural biological phenomena, however, cognition generates cultural historical trajectories. How and at what stages of evolution and development remain subjects of much debate (as evidenced, for example, in the Damerow, Savage-Rumbaugh, Tomasello, and Turiel chapters, this volume).
