chapter  7
Nonresidential Fathers and Their Children
WithMichael E. Lamb
Pages 16

Although the rates of divorce have leveled recently, it remains the case that about half of the children in the United States will experience the separation of their parents before they reach adulthood. Children are no longer stigmatized by their parents’ divorce as they were in earlier decades, but divorce is still not a victimless experience, and the adverse effects on children have attracted the attention of many researchers and clinicians. Recognition of these adverse effects, along with increased awareness of the vast number of children affected by divorce, have fueled efforts to both understand and minimize the effects. A discussion of these issues is at the heart of this chapter.
