ABSTRACT

In m any areas o f substance use research we encounter questions about w hether o r no t an individual is engaging in som e type o f substance use and w hat m ight pred ict w hether o r not a person uses a substance. For

exam ple, we m ight want to know w hether o r not a person is currently d ep en d en t on alcohol, o r we m ight want to know what m ight p redict w hether o r not an individual will use cocaine in the future. In the area o f sm oking behavior research, this kind o f question arises quite fre­ quently. For instance, we m ight want to p red ic t w hether o r not regular sm okers will be successful in their a ttem pts to quit smoking.
