ABSTRACT
Where should parenting research move in the next decade? No one has a crystal ball but based on past research and theory, as well as shifts in the roles that parents play in the larger matrix of socialization forces, some predictions and prescriptions can be offered. Understanding advances in various ways. Incremental progress should continue to be embraced, because most of our insights derive from cumulative increases in knowledge base. At the same time, we should be aware of paradigm shifts that will catapult us toward new levels of insight about parenting. These paradigm shifts can take the form of methodological breakthroughs, as well as new ways of conceptualizing the central issues of parenting.
