Academic dishonesty is a perennial problem in higher education. Although scholarly reports of academic dishonesty have appeared for more than 60 years, a concerted research effort was mounted only during the past 20 years. This increased interest may reflect the fact that “cheating has become one of the major problems in education today” (Singhal, 1982, p. 775). For example, Haines, Diekhoff, LaBeff, and Clark (1986) stated that “student dishonesty on college campuses throughout the nation has been widely recognized as epidemic” (p. 342).
