ABSTRACT

The rich and varied perspectives included in this book provide a broad view of contemporary philosophies concerning mathematics education. The goal of this postscript is to draw together the preceding chapters by outlining three common themes that cut across the two divisions of the book. These include:

The interrelations between the role of community and communication in establishing common interpretations.

The characterization of learning as a process of progressive refinement and reorganization.

Assumptions regarding the coemergence of meaning and symbolizations.
