ABSTRACT

Although each of the models present unique visions of and for Native education particular to specifi c linguistic and cultural traditions, there are several common themes. In this chapter, Sam Suina s words reveal a philosophy that is replicated across other models in this volume, that the foundation of learning must be built on spirituality and wisdom shared through our Native language and traditions. The core of spirituality that is represented in our model, Go to the Source, has it’s roots in Sam’s model, where he defi nes spirituality as a connection to the beauty and strength of the earth and to the beings that inhabit her, and to the teachings of our grandparents. Connection is a key principle of the model because it fosters responsibility, constructive interrelations between individuals and groups, and respect for Native language and cultural values. In essence, spirituality connects us to our ancestors, families, friends, and homeland.
