ABSTRACT

Kate Cherrington, the youngest participant at our gathering, embodied the vision of the Go to the Source model. Of Maori descent and a Native speaker of Maori, she is deeply rooted in her Native language and culture as well as skillful and capable in a modern society. Currently completing her master’s degree in educational administration, Kate is fl uent in dual cultures and languages and can span the boundaries between the Native and non-Native world. Kate recently left her responsibilities as education advisor for Te Wananga O Aotearoa, a Maori tertiary training initiative, to raise two children. Her tane (husband) continues to work for the institution as the educational manager. Kate’s model for Native education refl ects her own life journey as well as a powerful belief that education must place the child nurtured by extended family and community at its center.
