ABSTRACT
If there is one aspect of language, discourse, and communication Tove SkutnabbKangas has studied in her scholarly work and stood for in her personal life (the two inextricably combined), it has been people’s access to talk and text. Linguicism not only involves being barred from using your own language, but also being excluded from or marginalized in communicative events. You may be allowed to use a ‘foreign’ or a ‘minority’ language as immigrants or as children of immigrants, but what if your talk or text does not count, is not credible, or nobody listens to or reads you?
