ABSTRACT

Linguicism in operation is illustrated through a case study of an undergraduate studying at an academic institution overseas. Focusing on the complex relationships of power which exist in institutions, in particular between teachers and students, and between native-speakers of a language and nonnatives, the issue of how language is used as a means of controlling students ideologically is explored. The case confirms that language is playing an increasingly important role as a means of control and domination, as shown by Tove Skutnabb-Kangas (2000).
