ABSTRACT

The transition to parenthood is a time of significant change in the lives of young couples. Evidence points to the upheaval that occurs in individuals’ lives, in their marriages, and in their ties to friends and family (C. P. Cowan & P. A. Cowan, 1992; Cox, 1985). Some might not think that such a small being as an infant could occasion such major reorganization of the lives of

their parents, but the changes in demands, in roles, and in the way individuals experience their lives and their relationships are profound. The quality of these changes is likely to be associated with the course of early parenting.
