Leadership Challenges for the Future
The Army is currently in the throes of transforming from a heavy, cold war force to its stated Objective Force of the future. The Objective Force is a concept that describes how the Army can evolve into a light and deployable force with sufficient firepower to sustain itself against a variety of threats. This transformation is a complex undertaking involving changes in doctrine, organization, and equipment, and, in many ways, fundamental changes to the Army culture, most especially in leadership. Most certainly, these changes will be difficult. However, equally as certain, the leadership and training demands necessary to transform the Army will require a fundamental cultural change significantly more complex than the other issues, especially given the mounting emphasis on high technology.
