Examining the Full Range Model of Leadership: Looking Back to Transform Forward

ByBruce J. Avolio

Since Avolio and Bass first launched the full range leadership model (FRL) in 1990, considerable attention has been given to testing its validity across a broad spectrum of organizational settings and national cultures (Avolio, 1999; Bass, 1998). In this chapter, I lay the groundwork for using the full range model as one of the scaffolds upon which we can build a more complete model for individual, team, and strategic leadership development. I begin by briefly reviewing the model and then discuss aspects of its measurement and how it relates to performance, followed by a discussion of how it can be used to interpret leadership development.
