ABSTRACT

Since the 1950s, the amount of research on the family situation of older people has increased substantially. In reaction to earlier depictions of older people as socially isolated and undervalued, most of the discussion has focused on evidence that older adults tend to have strong family ties, report considerable satisfaction with their marriages, and remain sexually active well into old age. In this chapter, we review these and other issues relevant to the aging marriage, and the picture typically looks positive.
