Integrating Sex Therapy and Couple Therapy
This chapterprovides anoverviewof current approaches tounderstandingandchanging sexual dysfunction. There are a wide range of approaches, but we will primarily focus on the cognitive-behavioral couple sex therapy model (McCarthy, 2002a). Although there is a plethora of theoretical and clinical writing about the role of sexual satisfaction and sexual dysfunction in relationships, there is a dearth of empirical data. This chapter will explore hypotheses about the origin of sexual problems, types of sexual dysfunction, clinical assessment protocols, intervention strategies and techniques, sequelae of sexual problems in couple relationships, and the importance of a relapse prevention program so that sexuality can play an enhancing role in the couple relationship.
