Among developmental psychologists, identities are generally regarded as

good things. We encourage and promote the formation of strong identities, es-

pecially among adolescents and young adults. Outside of the developmental

realm, however, there is more caution. Social identities can, and regularly do,

generate deadly violence up to and including genocide (Maalouf, 2001;

Moshman, in press; Waller, 2002).
