ABSTRACT
With that pronouncement, Michael, who had been quite well-read-to for all of his 6 years, passed judgment on the books he had encountered so far in first grade. It was not clear to his mother (one of the authors of this chapter) what connection he saw between the learning-to-read work he was struggling with in school and the rich literature he so enjoyed hearing at home.
