ABSTRACT

What will the communication landscape look like 10 or 20 years into the future? Will it resemble a Buck Rogers or Star Trek world with tele-transportation, hologram telephones and other science fiction gadgets or will it resemble everyday life today? It appears that there will be many changes in the media landscape, for example, large-screen, high resolution TV sets; personal computers with audio, video and high resolution graphics capabilities; new forms of mobile communications; and many new interactive technologies. Further, some of these changes may have important political and social implications. For example, high definition TV may boost the prospects for politicians with a different personality/beauty quotient than the current generation of politicians. However, the media landscape in the next 10 to 20 years is not likely to fulfill the dreams of today’s science fiction writers.
