ABSTRACT
According to Sullivan (1993), it was the French historian de Tocqueville who, upon visiting the United States, observed that newspapers are not just a means to preserve freedom, they are a means to preserve civilization. Apparently, more than a century ago, the press was recognized as an educative institution, and as this chapter reveals, the emphasis on the role newspapers can play in educating society has steadily increased.
