ABSTRACT

A treatment team approach is used in the case study to demonstrate one rehabilitation model that incorporates all levels of the organization in the care and treatment of survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Survivors often have multiple and permanent physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments that require intensive rehabilitation and, depending on the severity of their deficits, long-term custodial or psychiatric care may be necessary. Progressive Rehabilitation and Independence (PRI) is an integrated community re-entry program for survivors of TBI that offers a day program with a variety of therapies, assisted residential living, and vocational training. The community re-entry emphasis of PRI focuses on developing higher-level cognitive and motor skills to prepare survivors of brain injuries for their return to independent living and potentially to work. Clients work with direct care workers and other treatment team members to become as independent as possible with everyday living skills such as cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and money management.
