Description of Syllable Structure in Colloquial Egyptian Arabic (CEA)

Broselow (1976), Gaber (1972), and Mitchell (1978) provided descriptions of Arabic syllable structure. The following generalizations about CEA syllable structure can be made:

• There are five syllable types: CV, CVC, CV:, CV:C, and CVCC. • CV and CVC are considered short (or ‘light’) and the rest are long (or ‘heavy’).
