ABSTRACT

Human performance improves with practice as learning occurs. Forgetting also occurs over time when people do not practice. Learning and forgetting are both extremely important in the design of industrial processes and products. Better designs are very quickly learned and resistant to forgetting. Quicker learning saves money, especially when production runs are short. This chapter shows how to quantitatively describe learning over time. Several models of learning are described, which ergonomic designers can use to predict performance as learning occurs.
