ABSTRACT

This chapter covers one of the most important aspects of macroergonomicsthe management of occupational safety and health. A brief history of workplace safety and health issues is presented, including the evolution of legal responsibilities of the employer. Next, contemporary methods for managing occupational safety and health are discussed. These methods are primarily instituted through a workplace safety program that encompasses the identification and management of workplace hazards, as well as accident monitoring and reporting. Finally, specific occupational hazards are discussed, including dangers from falls, mechanical injury, pressure hazards, electrical hazards, fire and other heat sources, toxic materials, noise hazards to hearing, and other vibration problems. Atmospheric, luminous, and acoustic hazards are also of concern in the workplace and were discussed in chapter 4.
