ABSTRACT

Local anesthetic agents are unique in that they produce a loss of sensation and muscle paralysis in a circumscribed area of the body by a localized effect on peripheral nerve endings or fibers (1). In spite of being very sensitive areas, the anal canal and the perianal skin can be anesthetized without causing much pain or discomfort, and the success of the anesthetic is predictable. The fully relaxed anal canal then becomes an ideal setting for various surgical procedures.
