ABSTRACT
Ulcerative colitis is a nonspecific inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects both sexes and occurs at all ages, with maximal onset between the second and fourth decades. The etiology is unknown, and no epidemiologic studies to date suggest that a transmissible causative agent is responsible for the disease.
