221More than 20 years have passed since optical fibers were introduced in commercial transmission systems. As shown in Figure 7.1, the fiber has various advantageous features with a strong impact on transmission systems. Thus, the systems receive a number of advantages superior to those of conventional transmission systems. Development of optical transmission systems has been smooth, and it is doubtless that the fibers played an indispensable role in the realization of the information society age.
