ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on conceptual approaches to human health and well-being in the context of the mining industry. It contributes to a multidisciplinary Mining and Environment Research Network (MERN) 3-year research project on environmental and social performance indicators detailed below. * The biomedical model of health and some of the implications that emerge from the predominant use of the biomedical model as a first step toward assessing the extent to which a minerals development project contributes to, or detracts from, the health of local communities is also examined. In addition, this chapter aims to build on, and contribute to, the work by the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) team in Goa, led by Dr. Ligia Noronha, and the Instituto de Estudios Regionales (INER) team, University of Antioquia in Colombia, led by Cristina Echavarria, on the effects of mineral development projects on human health and well-being.
