ABSTRACT
Cryptosporidiosis is an important cause of diarrhea or illness throughout the world. The relative resistance of the oocysts to chlorine means that disinfecting water with this chemical is ineffective, and waterborne outbreaks have resulted from inadequate or defective water treatment. Some of these outbreaks have been large, particularly those involving mains drinking water.
