ABSTRACT

The reproductive physiology of marine mammals is an extremely diverse topic; yet the small amount of information that has been collected has come from only a few species of cetaceans and pinnipeds. As a result, generalizations are made concerning the reproductive function of entire families based on information obtained from these few species. These generalizations must be interpreted with caution, as important differences exist among species within each family. In addition, this chapter focuses on reproductive aspects of species most likely to be encountered by veterinarians working with animals in captivity.
