ABSTRACT

The use of biocatalysts, that is, whole cells or isolated enzymes in organic synthesis, has been constantlygrowingoverthelastdecades,bothonlabscale[1-3]andindustrialscale[4,5].Enzymes showremarkablechemo-,regio-,andstereoselectivitiesandarethereforeusedinabroadrangeof resolutionreactionsorasymmetricsyntheses, forexample, inthesynthesisofchiralbuildingblocks (amines, alcohols),carbohydrateandpeptidechemistry, orothertransformations.Especiallythe improvements in molecular biology during the last decade, particularly in the šeld of protein engineering, allowedtocreatebiocatalystswithpropertiesadaptedtochemicalsynthesis, forexample, higherselectivityorprocessstability[6-8].Thishasleadtoanoverallincreaseintheapplication of enzymes for chemical purposes.
