ABSTRACT

Urinary stress incontinence is associated with urethral sphincter incompetence. Doxazosin is an α-adrenergic antagonist and has the potential to relax the internal urinary sphincter, potentially worsening stress incontinence. Nifedipine and verapamil could theoretically have an effect on the urinary bladder. Because they are both smooth muscle relaxants, some patients may find their overactive bladder symptoms are somewhat improved with these medications. Neither is approved for treating overactive bladder, however. Neither atenolol nor hydrochlorothiazide would be expected to have any significant effects on the urinary bladder.
