ABSTRACT

It is commonly believed that some form of medicine was practiced by all cultures on the planet throughout the course of human history. Initially, however, it was not an isolated methodology. Rather, the promotion of health and the healing and cure of illness and disease were part of a larger system-a working and living portion of a culture’s entire cosmological system that interwove spiritual beliefs, an explanation of the universe, the norms and values of the society of which it was a part, and even tasks of daily living.
