ABSTRACT
The title of the symposium at which a version of this chapter was rst presented was “Water of Life: Counterfactual Chemistry and Fine-Tuning in Biochemistry.” The word “counterfactual” in the subtitle was held by the organizers to be key: we were asked to imagine all kinds of alternative worlds in order to gure out whether it made sense to speak of water being “ne-tuned” for life.
