ABSTRACT

Over 10 years ago, Lennane and De Maria (1998) wrote an article in the Medical Journal of Australia entitled “The Downside of Whistleblowing” in which they described the potential devastating experiences that employees reporting some kind of wrongdoing may be confronted with. Whistleblowing occurs when an employee witnesses wrongdoing of some kind and reports it. Those who are informed of the wrongdoing may be leaders in the organisation or external authorities. The voicing of concerns may terminate the wrongdoing. But whistleblowing can also backfi re. A whistleblower often risks punishment in return for his or her initiative to stop the acts of wrongdoing.
